This Long Pause - Lyrics & Backstory
Verse
Give into your never ending appetite
Feed those dreams while overlooking others rights, and move on
We’ll take our share now, ignore the why the how
Put your heads down and let the system show you the way
Pre Chorus
And all I know it’s always been easier
To keep going on and never look behind
Feels like we can spin like this forever
If we could take the time to ask if we are losing our minds
Chorus
When this long pause turns to play
Would it all just change
Would it all be the same
As we walk outside that door
Could it all replay
The way it did before
Verse 2
Normalise the pain the loss the suffering
Consume like you won’t live another day, and move on
We’ll have it all today
Tomorrow’s another day
Let’s stick to the grind and we’ll wake up to find we’ve made it
Pre Chorus
And all I know it’s always been easier
To keep going on and never look behind
Feels like we can spin like this forever
If we could take the time to ask if we are losing our minds
Chorus
When this long pause turns to play
Would it all just change
Would it all be the same
As we walk outside that door
Could it all replay
The way it did before
Bridge (Instrumental)
Chorus
When this long pause turns to play
Would it all just change
Would it all be the same
As we walk outside that door
Could it all replay
The way it did before
This Long Pause - Backstory
This Long Pause quite literally is in reference to the pause created by the announcement of the global Covid-19 pandemic. It was a surreal experience for me as it was for many having absolutely everything you know and are used to 'pause' almost as if a button was pushed and the world stopped spinning and came to a grinding halt. This was a time (at least where I live) when people were literally in their houses not stepping out, there was nobody on the streets, no movement, no construction, no traffic sounds, honking of horns, nobody commuting to work. The images from a few drones and cameras that were out were telling. All human activity was at a standstill like no time I can compare to.
In a sense, the pause forced reflection of how we were living before this happened. As a a global society (myself included), is engrossed completely in consumerism. The pace of life is out of control, the hustle, the routine, obsession with money for moneys sake, the pressure to earn more, provide better..it was all turned up to 11 out of 10. In this vicious cycle, we've completely ignored the effects of this. The effects of what our actions cause. The effects on the planet, on nature, on others around us, others we share the planet with, animals, ecosystems and we've been living this bull dozer lifestyle without really stopping to question why.
The pause was perhaps the first collective opportunity for the world to stop, think and introspect our direction. The question I had while writing this song is what happens after the pause? Will it impact collective change in many areas of life to move towards a more conscious way of life for the world? Or would it shake it off and just go back to the way things were before?
