Flashing Yellow Lights - Lyrics & Backstory
Verse 1
It’s dark
It’s silent
Not for long
It’s on its way
I fear
The violence
I fear
It’s here to stay
Pre Chorus
Look out
They’re coming
Look up
They’re coming
Chorus
Flashing yellow lights in the sky
They’re coming for our lives
This isn’t our war
This isn’t our fight
Those yellow lights in the sky
They’re coming for our lives
As the profits rise
Do you hear our cries
Verse 2
Our lives, they’re shattered
As we run
There’s nowhere to hide
I’m numb, do we matter
Just memories
Of time gone by
Pre Chorus
Look out
They’re coming
Look up
They’re coming
Chorus
Flashing yellow lights in the sky
They’re coming for our lives
This isn’t our war
This isn’t our fight
Those yellow lights in the sky
They’re coming for our lives
As the profits rise
Do you hear our cries
Bridge
Chorus
Flashing yellow lights in the sky
They’re coming for our lives
This isn’t our war
This isn’t our fight
Those yellow lights in the sky
They’re coming for our lives
As the profits rise
Do you hear our cries
The Backstory Behind Flashing Yellow Lights
The inspiration for "Flashing Yellow Lights" and the title in itself goes back a long way. Back in my school days, while we had a home tutor, one of my best friends Bez would very randomly (perhaps in boredom from the long classes we had) look up in the air and say "Flashing Yellow Lights....in the Sky". This random statement would carry on till we were in high school and Bez would say "Flashing Yellow Lights.....in the sky" and another friend of ours would, just as randomly add an almost hiccup like sound 'mmmmiicahh'. I vaguely remember when asking what this was about, Bez explaining the "Flashing Yellow Lights in the sky" are bombs dropping relentlessly on helpless people in a war.
War, in my view and hopefully others is the worst, most inhuman, most pointless practice we have perpetuated on this planet. Beyond understanding why it still exists today in this day and age, it's often still glorified by many. There are no winners. At least, not among those who are involved directly in it or fight them. Worse still, those who profit from it, pull the strings or gain from it are so far removed from those whose lives are impacted and devastated by war. Even today, through 2020, war is destroying places around the world, tearing families, creating refugees, destroying lives of people who are often bystanders who want nothing to gain from it while those that gain from it and perpetuate it remain untouched.
