Ends Like This - Lyrics & Backstory
Verse 1
Rewind
To Where we are
And play
Sublime
Fragments of
This day
We’re mowing towards
Paths unknown
An exchange of words
The end unfolds
Verse 2
Blind
To where e faltered
Unkind, undone, unseen
If you imply it was fated from the start
It could move two ways
As the light inside was traded for the dark
Melted out the rays
There’s no way this could go on
There’s no way we’re getting out of this spiralling vortex of suffering
Say, what you will
Say
Chorus
I wish it didn’t have to end like this
It’s too late
To turn fate
If we could remain in a state of bliss
We’d, remain
(Bridge)
Chorus
I wish it didn’t have to end like this
It’s too late
To turn fate
If we could remain in a state of bliss
We’d, remain
And it ends
Like this
Ending
It ends, like this
It ends like this
Ends Like This - Backstory
As I usually do, I started writing the music or instrumental parts of the song before the lyrics. Starting with the verse which is the quieter clean guitar part with lots of delay. As the ideas progressed, I ended up playing around with some more djent / odd meter riffs combined with some event timed notes and that lead to the interesting riff you hear towards the end of the song. While I really liked that last part, I struggled a bit in the sense it didn't seem to fit in with the rest of the song and perhaps it could be left for another day and another song. While recording the part, I send a preview of the end riff to one of my oldest friends Bez and he replies, I wan't this full track now please! And he added, "Ended Like This" is the name of this song. At that point I had no working title, no lyrics or idea of what the song would be about. So I said, okay I can work with that and the song became about relationships that end and people going different ways. Something that's been happening quite a bit with differences of opinions, beliefs and often things said that can't easily be taken back.
Anyways, the really thing that emerged from Bez's giving the song a name was it made perfect sense to the structure of the song and combining the first part of the song with the ending which is a completely different tempo and timing. Both the theme of the song i.e. the relationship of the protagonist of the song and the song in itself....Ends Like This.
